Drinking With Diabetes

It could be quite natural for every person at one point in his/her life to drink a glass or more of wine or beer whether to celebrate an occasion or just to have a good time with friends. However, if you are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, intake of alcohol could have dire consequences if not managed properly. The great news for diabetic persons is that having diabetes does not automatically ruin your chances of enjoying that party with your favorite drink. If you know how to handle your blood sugar and monitor it properly, you can still toast with friends and family when you want to.

The key word even with people without diabetes is moderation. If you know your limit, you can best control what happens to your body. To guide Type 2 diabetics, it is best to follow only one drink for women and two drinks for men per day to avoid complications due to excessive or low levels of glucose in the body. However, each diabetic must clarify the amount of these drinks with their physicians so as not to misinterpret this recommendation.

It is a known fact that diabetics have a difficulty regulating their blood sugar levels which is why they need insulin injections when glucose rises in the body. However, when insulin is mismanaged and becomes excessive, it lowers the blood sugar at dangerous levels, thus the condition called hypoglycemia. This type of condition is also a risk when alcohol is taken too much by the body.

Though alcohol may at first increase blood sugar, huge amounts of it will lead to lowering of glucose.

The person experiences sweating and palpitations among others when this occurs. The problem with these symptoms is that these might not be recognized immediately as hypoglycemia since these are often experienced by a drunk person. The key is to let people know beforehand that you are a diabetic so that when this happens they will know exactly what is going on. And in case this occurs, you must take with you some sugar-filled food or drink that could help alleviate the condition.

Alcohol intake also may lead to weight gain and high blood pressure that are very important factors to control for any diabetic. It has also been noted that for some patients, drinking of alcohol lessens their ability to care properly for themselves when it comes to diabetes. Instead of maintaining a planned diet and a regular exercise schedule, they would have the tendency to disregard healthcare routines due in some part to alcohol. Thus for some, complete avoidance of liquor is the route to take in order to eliminate such risks.

But for those who choose to not take alcohol completely out of their lifestyle, restraint should always be practiced. Drinking should only be done with a filled stomach and for diabetics who do not want to add stress on their bodies, sweet drinks must not be their first choice to avoid high blood sugar levels. These guidelines are indeed important to sustain a healthy life while enjoying that drink once in a while.
