Type 2 Diabetes - Don't Allow a Diagnosis of Diabetes Get You Down!

When a person receives a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, one of the usual reactions is fear. Newly diagnosed diabetics naturally worry about the unknown, usually due to a lack of knowledge on the subject. Many people become depressed for the same reason. Knowledge not only improves your health, but your mood, too.
Here are a few simple ways to prevent a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes from depressing you:

1. Listen to your doctor. Your doctor will tell you actual facts on Type 2 diabetes, and not hearsay or speculation. They can answer your questions and, most importantly, put you on the path to managing your condition. But you have to listen to them and not just hear them.

2. Help yourself. Your level of health is directly related to the amount of effort you are willing to put into it. No one can do the work for you. If you are healthy, you will, of course, be happier. Allow yourself to eat poorly, not exercise, pack on the extra weight and not manage your condition, and you can be guaranteed to feel depressed. Which choice will you make?

3. Seek support from others. Involve your friends, family and co-workers. Let them know of your challenges and look to them for support. You will always fare better when you don't try to take on such an enormous burden by yourself. We all need inspiration from others. Feed off of that and use it to your advantage to beat depression before it starts.

4. Look to strangers. Support groups are an excellent way to tackle issues with Type 2 diabetes, including depression. People form support groups for one reason... they work. Uplifting others not only helps them, but it gives you a good feeling inside to know you have made a positive difference in another person's life. Usually, it's someone you have never met. How wonderful is that?

5. Look on the bright side. This might sound hopelessly cliche', but it's the truth. Yes, you have Type 2 diabetes. Yes, it would be better if you didn't have it. But there are far worse things that you could have in your life. You have to consider diabetes from this perspective: Type 2 diabetes is completely manageable if you adopt a healthy lifestyle. In many cases, diabetics have been able to completely come off of their medication and lead normal, productive lives without any trace of diabetes. And what's more, end up healthier than they would have been without a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. How many major diseases can you say that about?

Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. It need not slowly and inevitably get worse. You can take control of the disease... and take back your health and extend your life. It's all up to you!
